Ideal Water Parameters For A Reef Aquarium

The ideal water parameters for a reef aquarium with sensitive SPS or LPS corals are as follows:

pH: 8.0 – 8.4

Temperature:  Broad range 72° F to 84° F (22° Celsius to 29° Celcius), Optimal range 75° F to 81° F (24° C to 27° C) Saltwater Aquarium Water Parameters

Salinity: Specific Gravity:  Broad range 1.022 to 1.026, Optimal range 1.024 to 1.026

Alkalinity: Broad range 2.5 to 5.0 meq/L, Optimal range 3.0 to 4.0 meq/L

Ammonia (NH3): Zero

Nitrite (NO2): Zero

Nitrate (NO3): Ideally Zero to 25ppm (Zero to 5ppm for SPS corals, Zero to 25ppm for LPS corals. Some LPS corals can tolerate 50ppm of nitrate and higher)

Phosphate (PO4): <0.05mg/l, but zero is ideal

Calcium: 400 to 475 mg/l

Magnesium: 1200 to 1350mg/l

Dissolved Oxygen: >6.90 mg/L
